Understanding True Net Margin

Most profit calculators stop at referral fees. True margin includes FBA fulfillment and storage, advertising cost per unit, return-related losses, and your own shipping cost. Only when all six cost buckets are accounted for do you know which channel actually makes you money.

Amazon — Referral + FBA

Amazon charges a referral fee from 5% to 45% depending on category, calculated per unit. If you use FBA, add a fulfillment fee (based on size tier and weight) plus a monthly storage fee per cubic foot. Together these often push the true fee rate above 30% for standard-size items.

eBay & Walmart — Category Rates

eBay's final value fee ranges from 6.35% (musical instruments) to 14.55% (books and media) plus a $0.30 per-order fixed fee. Walmart charges 8–15% with no subscription or listing fees, making it competitive for high-volume sellers with established operations.

Etsy & TikTok Shop — Emerging Channels

Etsy charges 6.5% referral + $0.20 listing + 3% + $0.25 payment processing, totaling roughly 10% for most transactions. TikTok Shop is expanding rapidly with fees from 2% (electronics) to 8% (fashion) — often the lowest platform take rate available for eligible product categories.

Shopify — You Drive the Traffic

Shopify charges only payment processing (2.9% + $0.30 on Basic) with no marketplace referral fee. This makes it the highest per-unit margin channel for most products — but you are responsible for acquiring every customer, so ad spend per unit can quickly exceed what you saved on fees.
